Engine Diagnostics
A code reader tells you which circuit reported a fault. It does not tell you which part failed, and the difference between those two things is the difference between a repair that works and one that doesn't.
What the job involves
- Pull the stored and pending codes, plus the freeze-frame data that shows what the engine was doing when the fault was recorded.
- Test the components in that circuit rather than replacing the first part the code names.
- Explain what we found, what it will cost to put right, and what happens if you leave it.
- Give you the diagnosis in writing, whether or not you have the work done here.
When you need it
- The check engine light is on, steady or flashing — a flashing light means stop driving
- The engine is misfiring, hesitating or idling roughly
- Fuel economy has dropped noticeably
- The car failed a smog check
