Front and rear tires wear at different rates, and on a front-wheel-drive car the fronts go first by a wide margin. Rotating them on schedule is the cheapest way to get the mileage you paid for.
What the job involves
- Rotate the set in the pattern your vehicle and tires call for — directional tires and staggered fitments each have their own.
- Balance each wheel on the machine and correct any that have drifted.
- Check pressures and reset them to the door-jamb placard.
- Take a look at the brakes while the wheels are off, at no extra charge.
When you need it
- Every 5,000 to 7,500 miles for most vehicles
- A vibration through the steering wheel at highway speed — usually a balance problem
- A vibration you feel through the seat rather than the wheel — usually the rear wheels
- Visibly more wear on the front tires than the rear
